Mathewson, Kenneth L. (26 MAR 1907 – 08 DEC 1972)
Funeral services for Kenneth L. Mathewson, 65, and a lifelong resident of Owen
(Clark Co., Wis.), public leader and retired businessman, were held at two
o'clock Sunday afternoon, December 1th from the Congregational Church here. The
parish pastor, Rev. Kurt Sampson, officiated, with burial being made at
Riverside Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Lyle Haas, W.R. Haire, S.E. Grimes, Paul Fricke,
C.O. Albert, and Carl Riber.
Mr. Mathewson passed away early Friday morning at St. Joseph's Hospital,
Marshfield, where he had been a patient for the past three weeks, and twice
within that period of time had undergone major surgery. His death was attributed
to a ruptured artery.
Mr. Mathewson was born March 26, 1907 in Jump River, and moved to the Owen area
as a youngster. He received his education in the Owen grad and high schools. He
was married in Withee July 11, 1935 to the former Virginia Swanson, who survives
him.
He was a bookkeeper for the John S. owen Lumber Company in Owen for several
years; a Clark County Traffic Officer for seven years, and then operated a
filling station in Owen until 1955, when he decided to retire and sold his
business to Andy Smith.
Her served as Owen city clerk, alderman and mayor, each for several terms. He
was a member of the United Church of Christ, owen, and served on the church
board. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Owen. For many years he was an
outstanding pitcher for farmed Owen ball clubs, and was captain of the first
football team at Owen High School in 1923.
He possessed a warm and absorbing personality that endeared him to many in the
community with whom he had become acquainted during his long business,
political, and sports career.
Mourning his long suffering and loss are his wife, Virginia; a daughter, Mrs.
Frank (Carol) Moore, Wabeno; a son, Jeffrey, Milwaukee; two grandchildren; tw
sisters, Mrs. E.F. (Merna) Sullivan, Sheffield, Iowa, and Mrs. Celand (Lois)
Melbinger, Owen; and a brother, Donald Mathewson, Appleton.
