Owen, Ralph (26 MAY 1884 – 14 DEC 1972)

Eau Claire area pioneer lumberman Ralph Owen, 88, of 28 Newton Street died last Thursday afternoon in Luther Hospital.

Mr. Owen, born in Eau Claire, May 26, 1884, owned Three States Lumber Co., Rust-Owen Lumber Co. and the O & N Lumber Co.. He was currently president of J.S. Owen Lumber Co.

His father, John S. Owen, founded the city of Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), and the family came to Eau Claire in 1873.

Mr. Owen graduated from Princeton University in 1907, and also attended Oxford for several years. He taught at the University of Wisconsin from 1909 to 1916.

He was married in June of 1910 to Elinor Canover in Chicago, Illinois.

A past president of the Board of Directors at Luther Hospital for many years, Mr. Owen served on the hospital's advisory board, was a past member of the Eau Claire Public Library Board, the Eau Claire School Board, past chairman of Eau Claire Red Cross, served with the Red Cross in France and Germany during World War I, and was a member of the Eau Claire Civic Music Association Board.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ralph Jr., Fall Creek, and David B., Rock Falls; two daughters, Dr. Cora R. Owen, Hamilton, Montana, and Mrs. Margaret (Owen) Rogers, Eau Claire; eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Private funeral services were held Saturday.

The family requests that any memorials be given to Luther Hospital, Eau Claire.
