A farm boy from Clark County who arrived as a freshman at the Stevens Point
Normal School 51 years ago, and later became a faculty member at the
institution, will retire this spring.
A native of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), Kenneth W. Boylan spent his early life in
the northern part of Clark County and was graduated from Withee High School in
1918. After working for his father on the family farm for two years, he enrolled
at the normal school.
Boylan received a three-year certificate at Stevens Point in 1923, then went to
the University of Minnesota to secure a Bachelor's degree. He later won a
Master's degree from the University of Minnesota, and did additional graduate
work at the University of Wisconsin and Columbia University.
From 1936 tp 1967, Boylan was chairman of the mathematics department on campus,
a period when his department's faculty increased about 500 percent.
As a student he was at Stevens Point when it was a normal school, and as a
faculty member he saw it evolve from a state teachers college to state college
and finally to university.
