Meier, Alfred W. “Gramps” or “Big Al” (28 JUL 1927 - 19 JUL 2018)

Alfred W. Meier, aka “Gramps” or “Big Al” of Dorchester, was born on July 28, 1927. He passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on July 19, 2018, in Pleasant Prairie, surrounded by his three favorite girls: his wife, daughter and granddaughter.

Al served in the Navy from 1944 to 1948 in World War II and also was a truck driver by trade, getting to explore almost every state of this beautiful country from the front seat of a semi-truck. He was a very proud veteran and preferred his products to be “Made in America.” Al was thrilled to take the “Trip of a Lifetime” with the Honor Flight who flew him to D.C. to visit the World War II memorial in 2014.

Some of Al’s hobbies included being a lifetime member of the American Legion, AMVETS, Moose Club and a member of Peace United Church of Christ in Dorchester. He enjoyed listening to polka music on Sunday mornings and watching westerns on TV. Al was the beloved husband of Norma; they were married for 46 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Shelly Kozak, son-in-law, Joseph Kozak; granddaughter, Dani Kozak; and sister, Beverly Thomsen; along with many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Lola, Dorothy and Ruth.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, at 12 p.m. at Peace United Church of Christ in Dorchester. Reverend Doris Ruben will preside. Interment will be in Dorchester Memorial Cemetery following the service. Full military rites will be conducted by the Dorchester American Legion Post 517. Family and friends are welcome for the visitation on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Dorchester is assisting the family with arrangements.
