Sleeping sickness among horses continues to spread in Wisconsin, according to recent reports from a number of counties.

Since biting insects, such as mosquitoes and flies, are known to spread the disease, veterinarians and county agents are recommending that horse be protected from mosquitoes by being kept in screened stables at night and protected from flies in daytime by the use of fly spray and burlap nets.

The disease often produces a drowsy and weakened condition, which often results in death. The disease is seasonal and is most prevalent during the summer months.
