Fort Ord, California, July 19, 1971 – Army Private Bruce J. Olson, 22, son of
Reverend and Mrs. Robert W. Olson, 220 Rusch Street, Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), is
assigned to Fort Ord, California, where he is training under the modern
volunteer Army field experiment.
The new concept, called Volar, combines basic and advanced individual training
into a single 10-week program. Decentralized instruction at the unite level and
a reduction of formation and inspections given the soldier more time to train
and increased off duty time. Fewer restriction on off-duty travel and improved
living facilities are other benefits of the Volar concept.
