Poehnelt, Leo A. (22 NOV 1940 - 11 SEP 2018)
Leo A. Poehnelt, age 94 of Abbotsford, passed away on Tuesday, September 11,
2018 at the Waterford in Colby under the tender care of Aspirus Hospice,
surrounded by his family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, September 15,
2018 at Saint Bernard’s Catholic Church in Abbotsford. Father Tim Oudenhoven
will officiate. Interment will follow at the Abbotsford Public Cemetery. Family
and friends are welcome from 4:00 until 8:00 pm on Friday, September 14, 2018 at
the Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford with a rosary service at 7:30
pm and from 9:30 am until the time of mass on Saturday at the church.
Leo was born on August 30, 1924, the son of Carl and Mary (Ramskugler) Poehnelt.
He attended Pleasant Heights School in Medford. He was united in marriage to
Lita Oelke on November 13, 1948 at the Holy Rosary Rectory in Medford. Leo
farmed in Dorchester and drove milk truck for a number of years before moving to
Abbotsford where Lita and Leo purchased a gas station which became Leo’s 24 hour
Service, retiring in 1981. In his retirement Leo worked for Carquest in
Abbotsford until the age of 88. Leo was a man of strong faith and devoted to his
family. He was a member of Saint Bernard’s Catholic Church in Abbotsford. Leo
enjoyed gardening, playing sheepshead and dominos.
Leo is survived by his six children: Cheryl (Garrett) O’Reilly of East Troy,
Karen LaPine of Abbotsford, Allen (Judy) Poehnelt of Medford, David (Linda)
Poehnelt of Marshfield, Dawn (Gene) Allar of Spencer and Mark Poehnelt of
Madison; 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by
his sister: Christina Pillar of Medford, sister-in-law: Catherine Poehnelt of
Marshfield, a brother-in-law: Leland (Sharon) Oelke of West Bend and nieces,
nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 67 years, Lita on August 23,
2016, a son-in-law: Lawrence LaPine, five brothers and four sisters.
