Following the 1 p.m. Lublin Parade on Sunday July 29, The Thorp VFW and other
veteran’s groups will honor Vietnam veteran Gary Bandor at his grave site in St.
Mary’s Polish national Cemetery, just west of Lublin.
Presentation of a plaque will be given at which Tom Misfeldt will speak.
Misfeldt was a classmate and friend of Bando. Gary was the son of Jess and Ann
Bandor, and brother to Larry (Mary) Bandor and Karen (Jim) Buss.
Bandor was one of the great athletes in Thorp history. He was selected
All-Northwest quarterback in both 1962 and 1963, and also made the All-Northwest
basketball team in 1963-1964.
He graduated from Thorp High School in 1964 and entered the University of
Wisconsin. He played on the freshman football team that fall and was elevated to
the varsity as a sophomore the following year. Bandor was a letter winner as a
defensive back and offensive flanker.
He entered service in the spring of 1966 and had already served a year in
Vietnam when the accident at Ft. Sill, OK occurred. He died from his injuries on
March 23, 1968.
Everyone is welcome and all veterans are encouraged to participate.
