Schmidt, Fred J. (20 MAR 1893 – 5 SEP 1971)

Fred J. Schmidt, 78, 1402 N. 26th Street, Sheboygan, died Sunday morning, September 5, 1971 at St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan, where he had been admitted a day earlier.

He was born March 20, 1893 in Sheboygan, son of Christ and Henrietta Schmidt, and attended Horace Mann Grade School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War I.

Mr. Schmidt married Miss Matilda Oberle of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) November 11, 1919. The couple lived in Thorp, where he was a rural mail carrier, retiring in 1956. They moved to Sheboygan in 1957.

He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Parish and its Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Sheboygan Barracks, 2091, Veterans of World War I, and Cecil Tormey American Legion Post 118 at Thorp.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Arnold (Rachael) Mortensen and Mrs. Donald (Adeline) Bratz, both of Sheboygan; a son, William, Sheboygan; 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry; and two sisters, Mrs. John Manthey and Mrs. Clarence Schaele, all of Sheboygan.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters, and a grandchild.

Services were Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Dominic Church, following brief rites at 10 a.m. at the Ballhorn Funeral Chapel. Father Cyril Volz, pastor of the church, celebrated the funeral Mass. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
