The Neillsville Kiwanis Club has named Joe Anason as its Junior Kiwanian for September, which continues the club’s long-running salute to outstanding senior students into the 2018-2019 school year.
Anason is the son of Larry and Kay Anason.
“Joe compiled a very impressive list of academic, athletic and community-related achievements going into his senior year,” Kiwanian Brett Shoup wrote in a statement.
Anason is a member of the National Honor Society and the Neillsville High School (NHS) History Club. He has a 4.0 grade-point average, is taking 16 college credits.
Anason is a member of the track and field and cross-country teams and has captained both squads in the past. He has been named to the All-conference team in track and completed at state last season in the 800. He achieved all-conference in cross-country in 2017.
He is active in Kyukido, a martial art. He is a first-dan black belt and has received the outstanding Assistant of the Year and Most Improved Martial Artist of the Year Awards.
A longtime member of Boy Scouts, he has achieved numerous honors, including 26 merit badges, top salesman in the council and brotherhood in the order of the arrow and attained more than 20 hours of volunteer work.
“Most impressive is his final step to becoming an Eagle Scout, which includes his project of construction of a band stage at Schuster Park,” Shoup wrote. “With completion of the project, he will provide the community with a lasting reminder of his scouting achievements.”
Anason also does volunteer work at The Highground and works seasonally at the Citizens Stater Bank. He is a member of the NHS Pep Band and has played piano for several years.
Anason plans to attend either Marquette University or the university of Wisconsin-Madison next year to major in business.
“The Junior Kiwanian program served to highlight the achievements of Neillsville senior students and emphasizes Kiwanis’ primary focus on serving the needs of our youth,” Shoup wrote. “The club wishes Joe Anason continued success in this school year and beyond.”
