“It’s not just a place to work: it’s compassion and caring and understanding,” said Linda Wright, patient services representative at Memorial Medical Center (MMC) in Neillsville.

Linda Wright is retiring after having spent the past 36 years serving the people of Neillsville and the surrounding area. Her last day as a receptionist will be Sept. 28.

Wright moved to Granton from West Virginia in 1976. She began working at MMC on Sept. 9, 1982.

“I went in and Glen Grady [the CEO at that time] interviewed me, and I went home, and he called me and told me I had the job,” she said. “I was new up here and just wanted to establish relation-ships. And I had three kids and I just wanted to get out and make friends.”

While Wright has certainly been able to do that, as she has gotten to know many people in the community over her time, she has also seen a lot of changes over the years, Wright said.

“There’s been lots of adding on, and people coming and going, and we’ve grown, and I think we’ve just gotten better as the years have gone by,” she stated.

One obvious change has been the influx of technology. Wright said that when she started working, everything was written out on paper.

Various procedures and processes for MMC have also changed. When patients would come in for surgery when Wright first started, she said, it was typical for them to stay a week or more in the hospital. Now most surgeries are outpatient, with the patient going home the same day.
