Fire early Tuesday destroyed a large dairy barn and eight calves on the Emory
Maninen farm, route 1, Withee (Clark Co., Wis.), about 4 1/2 miles northwest of
Withee.
The original 36 by 50 barn, later enlarged by a 24 by 34 foot addition, was
purchased by Maninen about a year ago.
There was no estimate of the loss, which also include 8,000 bales of hay, some
straw and a manure spreader.
The blaze was was discovered about 2 a.m. and was reported to the Owen-Withee
Fire Department, which responded promptly to a call for assistance.
Cause of the blaze has not been determine, but firemen have not ruled out the
possibility that lightning may have started the fire.
The owner said the loss was partly covered by insurance.
