Karlen, Dorothy M. (Nowak) (23 APR 1923 - 2 JUL 2006)
Dorothy M. Karlen, 83, 2941 Four Mile Road, Marathon, died Thursday, July 20,
2006 under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Colonial
Manor Medical and Rehabilitation Center, Wausau.
She was born April 23, 1923 in the town of Cassel. On May 16, 1942 she married
Marcel Jacob "Toby" Karlen at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cassel. He preceded
her in death on May 3, 2002.
Dorothy and Toby farmed in the town of Marathon for many years. Besides spending
countless hours in the ginseng fields Dorothy enjoyed cooking, traveling and
playing Bingo. Most of all she cherished the time she spent with her family,
especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include her two children, Tom (Lianna) Karlen and Sandy Barnett, both
of Marathon, 11 grandchildren, Nathan (Allyson Holland) Karlen, Kimberly,
Jonathan, Kevin, Kristina Karlen, Jeffery (Jackie) Karlen, Keith Karlen, Crystal
(Jeff) Berens, Brian (Cheri) Barnett, Ken (Mary Jo) Barnett Jr., John (Melissa
Skrzypchak) Barnett and eleven great grandchildren and one sister, Marcy
Petrowski, Wausau.
Besides her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Ken
Barnett Sr. and three brothers, Henry, Alex and John.
The funeral mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday July 24, 2006 at St. Mary
Catholic Church, Marathon. The Rev. Joseph Diermeier will preside. Burial will
be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the
Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Marathon and again on Monday from 10:00 a.m.
until the time of services at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Mary Catholic Church.
