Smith, Vernon (1915? – 05 DEC 1971)
Federal Aviation Administration investigators are examining wreckage from a
plane which crashed and burned Sunday, killing the pilot, Vernon Smith, 56,
route 2, Granton (Clark Co., Wis.).
Clark County Sheriff's authorities said Smith's planed crashed near the Town of
Lynn, about 1 miles south of Highway 10 in a heavily wooded section. Witnesses
led authorities to the site.
According to authorities, the plane crashed at about 6 p.m., shortly after
takeoff from a private airfield at Smith's home. They said Smith was apparently
killed instantly in the crash, but FAA investigators say they intend to perform
and autopsy.
Smith owned and operated Vern's TV and Communications store in Neillsville
(Clark Co.), and Loyal. Iin the past several years worked as chief engineer for
WCCN radio station.
He was enroute from his farm home airfield to the airport at Marshfield at the
time of the crash.
