Karlen, Marcel "Toby" (26 APR 1921 - 3 MAY 2002)
Marcel "Toby" Karlen, 81, 2941 Four Mile Road, Marathon, died Friday, May 3,
2002, under the care of Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Community Health
Care Wausau Hospital.
Toby was born April 26, 1921, son of the late Peter and Christina (Gonnering)
Karlen. He married Dorothy Nowak, May 16, 1942 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church
in the town of Cassel. She survives.
Toby was a farmer who worked with ginseng, cattle and hauled granite from his
own quarry. An avid fisherman and hunter, he especially loved hunting deer and
elk, never missing a season in the last 52 years. His grandchildren and great
grandchildren were a great source of joy.
Besides his wife of nearly 60 years, Dorothy, he is survived by one son, Tom (Lianna)
Karlen, Wausau; one daughter, Sandy Barnett, Marathon; 11 grandchildren, Nathan,
Kimberly, Jonathan, Kevin, Kristina, Jeffery (Jackie) Karlen, Keith (Cindy)
Karlen, Crystal (Jeff) Berens, Brian (Cheri) Barnett, Ken (Mary Block) Barnett
Jr., John (Melissa Skrzypchak) Barnett; 8 great grandchildren.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Violet Kamenick.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 5 p.m., Sunday, May 5, 2002, at St. Mary
Catholic Church, Marathon. The Rev. Joseph Diermeier will preside. Burial will
be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 1-4:30 p.m., Sunday at
Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Marathon.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
