Schoonover, Allen J. (10 JUL 1934 – 9 OCT 2018)

Allen J. Schoonover, 84, Loyal, peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 13, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Loyal. Rev. Leo Stanislaus officiated. A private family burial will be held in St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery at a later date. Pallbearers were his sons-in-law: Larry Sturcken, Jim Elliott, Dean Suda, Kerry Hansen, Dean Pieper and Ryan Geiger. Honorary pallbearers were his sons: Terry, Todd and Tony. Military rites were conducted by the Loyal American Legion Post #175.

Allen Jess Schoonover was born on July 10, 1934, in Muscoda, the son of Buford J. and Alta M. (nee Holloway) Schoonover. He was raised in the Muscoda area until his family moved to a farm in Loyal in 1942. Allen graduated from Loyal High School in 1952 and then moved to Arizona where he operated a cotton-picking machine harvesting cotton. He enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1954 and served until his honorable discharge in September 1956. Allen married Sharon Ann Denk on Oct. 20, 1956, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Loyal. They lived in Milwaukee for a short time and then moved back to Loyal where he trained under his brother-in-law to be a meat cutter. After working in his brother-in-law’s meat market for two years, they moved to Arizona in 1958. Allen drove truck in Arizona for one year and then they moved to Genesee Depot in 1959, where he worked on a chicken farm. In 1967, they returned to Loyal and Allen owned and operated his own milk hauling route. He sold his milk truck and went to work for Roehl Transport driving over-the-road until retiring in 1996. During his retirement, Allen had many interests, but especially loved being home, spending time with his family and friends, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, fishing, hanging out with the “guys”, playing cards, and holding Sharon’s hand. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, the Loyal American Legion Post #175, and was a former volunteer fireman for many years.

Allen will be dearly missed by his wife, Sharon, of Loyal; his children: Terry (Renee) Schoonover of Alma, Tami (Larry) Sturcken of Dallas, Jodi (Jim) Elliott of Medford, Debi (Dean) Suda of Ham Lake, Minn., Lori (Kerry) Hansen of Spencer, Todd (Shelby) Schoonover of Wausau, Tony (Brenda) Schoonover of Loyal, Viki (Dean) Pieper of Loyal, and Keli (Ryan) Geiger of Loyal; 23 grandchildren; 16 greatgrandchildren; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Jyllian Pieper; and three sisters: Ilene Ganoe, Mary Teach and Joann Colby.
