Hartwig, John "Jack" (31 DEC 1937 - 23 DEC 2014)

John "Jack" Hartwig, 76, Wausau, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, December 23, 2014, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.

He was born December 31, 1937, in Wausau, son of the late Ervin and Emily (Zunker) Hartwig.
Jack graduated from Wausau East High School and studied Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Marathon Center and the University of Wisconsin- Madison. He returned to Wausau to work with his father and brother, and helped build Hartwig Manufacturing Corporation into one of the Midwest's premier bridge fabricators.

On August 26, 1961, he married Mary Walters at Holy Name Catholic Church, Wausau. They were happily married for 53 years, during which time they raised two children together. Jack was a member of the US Army Reserves, where among his many duties was to guard Fort Knox.

In his prime, Jack enjoyed sailing, skiing, golfing and reading. He loved spending time with his family and friends at his cottage in Northern Wisconsin and vacationing on Sanibel Island, Florida. Jack will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his generosity, and his love of history.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Hartwig, Wausau, two children, Jason Hartwig, Roseville, Minn. and Jennifer Hartwig, Madison, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Hartwig and two sisters, Dawn Bach and Delores Viergutz.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to his long time caregivers for the extraordinary love, care, and support they gave to both Jack and the family.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11:30 a.m. Friday January 2, 2015 at The Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, 621 No. Second Street, Wausau. Rev. David Bruener will preside. Friends may call on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Good News Project or The Neighbor's Place.

Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau, is in charge of arrangements.
