Apfelbeck, Mr./Mrs. Leo (Gold – 9 JUL 1969)

Mr. and Mrs. Leo Apfelbeck of Colby (Clark Co., Wis.) began the observance of their golden wedding anniversary with a special high mass at 8:15 a.m. Saturday morning, July 12, 1969. The marriage ceremony took place in this same church July 9, 1919, with the Rev. Henry Lachnitt officiating. The Rev. Francis Rushman officiated at the anniversary mass, for which Father Olson and the Brothers of Pius X sang.

The attendants at the wedding, Ernest Apfelbeck of Abbotsford, a brother of the groom, and Mrs. Albert (Loretta) Kunze of rural Abbotsford, sister of the bride, were both present for the anniversary celebration.

Following the mass, a reception was held at the Colby Hotel and dinner was served to 80 guests. Centering the special table was a golden anniversary cake. Yellow and white pompons were used in table decorations, and feathered yellow carnations were used in the corsage and boutonniere of the honored couple.

Leo Apfelbeck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Apfelbeck, was born January 5, 1889 on his parent's farm in rural Colby. He was educated in the Riverside School, Town of Hull. He farmed with his parents until 1910, when he left for California, and was a lumberman. In two years he returned to rural Colby and farming.

During World War I he was with the Army, 3rd Division, 30th Infantry, from 1917 to 1919, in France. He is an active member of the VFW Post 865 of Abbotsford, and hold the office of adjutant. He also holds office in World War I Barracks and Cootie organization.

Mrs. Apfelbeck, the former Hildegarde Ohlinger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Ohlinger, was born November 15, 1897 in rural Colby and also attended Riverside School.

After their marriage they farmed in rural Colby until retirement in March 1961, and then moved to the city of Colby.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Apfelbeck are in excellent health and enjoy playing cards as their principal hobby.

They have three sons, Francis of Grofino, Idaho, John of Wausau, and Leo Jr. of Colby, and seven daughters, Mrs. Arnold (Mary) Butenschom of Rosemont, Illinois, Mrs. Raymond (Mildred) Juedes of Stetsonville, Mrs. Frank (Stella) Dobner of Wooddale, Illinois, Mrs. Joseph (Teresa) Rindt of Stetsonville, Mrs. Earl (Monica) Biter of Mt. Prospect, Illinois, Mrs. Alvin (Genevieve) Abbeglan of Stetsonville, and Mrs. Lavern (Pearl) Nosbisch of Colby.

Another son, Joseph, died in infancy, and another daughter, Mrs. Norbert (Adeline) Dahlke, died January 13, 1966.

The Apfrelbecks have 39 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Mr. Apfelbeck has two sisters, Mrs. Mathilda Schraufnagel and Mrs. Rose Thorn, of Colby, and four brothers, Carl, Ben, and Albert, all of rural Colby, and Ernest of Abbotsford.

Mrs. Apfelbeck has four sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Art (Nora) Eberly of Madison, Mrs. Theresa Fortman of Fort Recovery, Ohio, Mrs. Nat (Susan) Gindt of Boyd, Mrs. Albert (Loretta) Kunze of rural Abbotsford, John Ohlinger and Arnold Ohlinger of rural Colby.

Guests who attended the golden wedding celebration were from Montrose, Mt. Prospect, Illinois, Wooddale, Illinois, Wausau, Stetsonville, Colby, Abbotsford, and vicinity.
