Elaine Marie Lindner was born on Dec. 22, 1929, in Loyal, to Casper and Marie
(nee Keller) Lindner. She was raised on the family farm and received her
education at St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from Greenwood High School
in 1948. Elaine married Wayne Herdrich on April 8, 1953, at St. Mary’s Catholic
Church in Greenwood. They later divorced. She farmed in the town of Eaton and
worked as a bookkeeper/teller at Farmers and Merchants Bank in Greenwood for 17
years. After moving off the farm, she owned and operated the Greenwood Cafe from
1986-96. Elaine then became involved with the Greenwood American Legion, cooking
many meals for all kinds of events, including weddings, birthdays and funerals.
She also was a substitute cook for Greenwood High School, volunteered at St.
Mary’s School, and cooked for many local events. She was a very active lifelong
member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Anne’s Society, a member of the
Greenwood American Legion Auxiliary, and served as treasurer for the town of
Eaton and on the town election board for many years. Elaine had many interests,
but especially enjoyed farming, cooking and baking. She loved spending time with
her family and friends. Her grandchildren were the love of her life. She also
spent many years cooking at the family cabin up north during deer hunting in
November.
She will be dearly missed by her daughters: Janet (Timothy) Wojcik of Stanley,
Jeanne (Peter) Opelt of Greenwood, and Barbara (Edward) Genett of Auburndale; 13
grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law: Susan Herdrich of
Greenwood and Trudy Herdrich of Eau Claire; five sisters: Jacqueline Lindner of
Greenwood, Irene Wilke of Loyal, Jeanette Sullivan of Virginia, Shirley (Henry)
Janezich of Willard, and Dorothy Wessell of Sheboygan; four brothers: Donald
(MaryAnn) Lindner of Greenwood, Arthur (Shirley) Lindner of Loyal, Richard
(Bonnie) Lindner of Greenwood, and LaVerne (Joan) Lindner of Loyal; and many
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; two sons: James “Jimmer” Herdrich
in 2009 and Kenneth Herdrich in 2011; one brother: Carl Lindner in 2008; and her
special friend: Lawrence “Ozzie” Jackson in 2010.
A special thank you to her sister, Jackie, for the care provided to our Mom
these past two years. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be
directed to St. Mary’s Memorial Fund.
