Steiner, Jeanette M. (7 March 1933 – 23 October 2018)

Jeanette M. Steiner, age 85, of 333 Maple Street, Granton died at 4:51 p.m., Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at her home.

Jeanette was born to Loren and Amelia Hales on March 7, 1933 in the Town of York. She attended Merryvale Grade School and graduated from Granton High School in 1951. She married Francis Steiner on July 9, 1953 at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Chili.

Before marriage she worked as a secretary at Roddis Manufacturing. In 1972 when the children were all in school, she became the owner/operator of Steiner’s Store in Granton until the family sold it in 1983. She became clerk of the Village of Granton in 1967 a position she held for 48 years, when she retired in 2015.

She made a life-long vocation of community service in Granton where she lived all her life. She helped develop and raise funds for what became a local institution – the Granton Community Park.

Since the park’s origin in 1971, and until she retired, she was secretary/treasurer of the park and oversaw its activities, including sports leagues, tournaments, and an annual Park Benefit Picnic along with the management of the concession stand.

As clerk/treasurer of the Village of Granton she administered several large grant projects, including a community development block grant, a wastewater treatment facility project, Wisconsin Development Fund project, and a Rural Development Water Construction Project. She also developed the entire house, businesses and property numbering system for the village.

She was a founding member of the Granton Area School Foundation. She represented the Granton area on the Board of Directors of Neillsville Memorial Medical Center (MMC), serving as president for numerous years. In this role she was a founding member of the MMC Foundation. For many years she was clerk/treasurer of the Neillsville Municipal Ambulance Service. She was organist and choir director for over 40 years at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Chili. She was a life-time member of the Southern Clark County Sportsman’s Club and the Granton FFA Alumni. In 1995, she was named the outstanding FFA Alumni member in the state. She served as president of the Granton FFA Alumni for two years and was Central Wisconsin sectional representative for the state FFA Alumni board for four years.

She was a member of the Samson Memorial Library board located in the village and a member of the Granton Rotary, where she was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow. In 1994, she was named the” Outstanding Citizen of the Year” in Granton in conjunction with the annual Granton Fall Festival.

Jeanette was an amazing mother and grandmother who is survived by five children, Sharon Garbisch of Granton, Greg (Wendy) Steiner of White Bear Lake, MN, Kevin (Linda) Steiner of West Bend, Sheila Fenolio of Appleton, Ann (Jim) Maastricht of Sun Prairie. She is further survived by 11 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, Kathleen Hales of Granton, Beverly Steiner of Mauston, and Jean Steiner of Mauston, and a very special friend, Gene Cattanach of Granton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis, a son-in-law, Orville Garbisch and siblings: Marie Hillert, Evelyn Dudei, Norman Hales, Marjorie Eid and Albert Hales.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Granton Area School Foundation or the Memorial Medical Center Foundation.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 29, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Neillsville. The Celebrant will be Rev. Varkey V. Joseph. Music will be provided by Vicente Cortez, organist and St. Mary’s Choir. Interment will be in the Windfall Cemetery in Granton. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday at the Gesche Funeral Home and from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church.
