Local veteran Tom Short will be one of four area veterans to be recognized by the Neillsville legion for their service in the Armed Forces.

Short was born in Neillsville and attended school in the city. He graduated from the high school in 1967. He worked at the family business while in high school and after graduation until being drafted into the Army in May 1969.

Short’s basic training was in Fort Lewis in Washington. He was sent to advanced training at Fort Sill in Oklahoma for field artillery. He had extra training on the eight-inch self-propelled Howitzer.

He was transferred to the 3rd Battalion and 76th Artillery as a part of the 3rd Infantry Division in Kitzingen, Germany. Short worked up the ranks and became a section chief. The unit went on field exercises twice a year and took part in the first re-forger exercise.

Short was discharged in 1971. He came back to Wisconsin to work on the family fur farm and became a partner. In 1973, Short was called back for two weeks of summer camp to teach self-propelled school at Fort Sill.

In 1982, Short sold out of the fur farm partnership and became a veal producer. He did this for 23 years. That was followed by seven years of delivering heavy trucks for V&H Trucks, Inc. nationwide.

Short married his wife, Beverly in 1971, and the two have enjoyed traveling. He enjoys all forms of motor sports, building hot rods and flying RC model airplanes.

Short will be recognized along with his cousin, Wayne, and Butch and Kevin Ehlers on Nov. 5, at the American legion Post 73, 6 Boon Boulevard, Neillsville. There will be a social hour at 4:30 p.m. and a potluck at 5:30 p.m.
