Four little words, “The war is over,” which came over the wire last Thursday
noon set the city and whole country too, wild with delight, whistles blew, bells
rang, bands played and people marched, sang and shouted until they could not
shout any longer.
But that report was a little premature. However, it gave the people a chance to
prepare for the real thing that all seemed sure would not be long delayed.
Monday morning, the ringing of the fire bell, about five o’clock, was
interpreted by all who heard it to mean, “The war was at an end.”
