Following the axe slashing of her husband, James E. French, 79, at Westboro
Saturday evening, Mrs. Augusta French, 81, was committed to the state hospital
at Winnebago in Judge E. J. Neuenschwander’s court Tuesday.
French is at the Medford hospital in a critical condition but with a good chance
to recover if no complications occur. He was cut 30 or 40 times, the assault
starting while he was sitting in his home, reading and listening to a radio.
From observation of Undersheriff John McQuillen, and Earle Rusech, who took a
ambulance to Westboro after him, French was struck first from behind and pursued
as he sought to crawl under a table to escape he rain of blows.
