A business career that spammed 38 years in the city will come to a close on the
8th of July 1973 when E.R. Haselow’s interest in his hardware Store will be sold
to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gehrke.
The Gehrkes are a young couple, but need no introduction to area residents, as
both were born and raised here (Owen, Clark Co., Wis.). He is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Louie Gehrke and she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Sluzewski.
Mr. Haselow came to Owen from Loyal, opening his store here in the brick
building to the south of the Fremont Hotel on the 9th of September in 1935. At
that time the store was an affiliate of the Gamble chain, but that association
was dissoloved after several years, and Mr. Haselow has operated as an
independent merchant.
In 1953 he built the building now occupied by the store, just east of Central
Avenue and Fifth Street, with the red front.
He and his wife Helen, who has been associated with him in the store in recent
years, will continued to make their home in Owen, but plans for the future,
other than doing some fishing, are indefinite, although Elmer says he has one or
two proposals in mind that might keep him occupied.
During his 38 years in Owen he has been an active member of the Businessmen’s
Club, Kiwanis Club, and an active promoter of all civic events, including the
Owen Junior Fair. He will continue to be active in the affairs of his church and
fraternal affiliations, and his fellow businessmen and friends wish he and his
wife the best in their retirement.
