Hollie Nyseth Brehm, Neillsville Class of 2004 and UW-La Crosse Class of 2008,
received a Doctorate Degree in sociology/human rights from the University of
Minnesota during the May 2014 commencement.
To complete her dissertation on the societal, state and international
preconditions of genocide and the many variations in violence within genocides
Brehm lived for more than a month each in Bosnia, Rwanda and near Sudan where
she interviewed over 100 survivors, and perpetrators of those three genocides.
She also lived for three months in the Netherlands where she used the library
archives at The Hague, site of the International Court of Justice, to research
genocide and war crimes.
To date, the Neillsville native has presented her genocide findings at national
conferences and four international conferences. The United States National
Science Foundation and several United Nations NGOs have requested a copy of the
400-page dissertation.
Dr. Brehm and husband Mike, a corporate attorney, will be moving to Columbus,
OH, in July, where she will be a full-time professor at Ohio State University.
She extends her sincere gratitude to the many inspiring teachers at the School
District of Neillsville who guided her first steps on the path of knowledge.
