Neillsville Boy Scout Troop 43 Experiences Weeklong Camp (Rice Lake - 2014)
Neillsville Boy Scouts attended a weeklong camp July 20 to 26 to earn Merit Badges, learn new skills, develop teamwork and leadership skills and to have fun living and working together. Contributed photo
Fourteen boy scouts along with three adult leaders recently attended a weeklong camp from July 20-26. The camp is located on 1,400 acres north of Rice lake. While at the camp, the scouts were able to work on various Merit Badges by taking classes in canoeing, kayaking, wilderness survival, cooking, American Heritage, fishing and others.
While spending the week living in tent cabins, the goal was to get the boys living and working together as a team and developing their leadership skills. The three newest boys of the troop: Skylar Drinka, Sawyer Durst and Andrew Felski, spent the week learning scout skills such as knot tying, fire building, cooking, ways to be a good citizen of the community, country and world, swimming and camping. Their week was highlighted with a five-mile hike around the camp.
Matthew Jacobs and Dave Bedell also completed the one-mile swim. Over the week, they first had to do a quarter-mile, then a half-mile and finally the one-mile. Congratulations for that accomplishment!
The week ended Friday night with an impressive award ceremony, a chapel service and the Order of the Arrow (OA) callout ceremony. The OA is the Honor Society of Boy Scouts. Joey Anason and Logan McQuade along with adult leader, Larry Anason, were elected by their peers to this organization. They join current fellow members Mason Bedell, Dalton Durst, Dominic Kuhn, Glenn Slenczka and Dave Bedell, from Neillsville, who strive to provide cheerful service to others.
It is with the continued community support of their upcoming popcorn sale that allows the camp to continue in operation, as well as make it possible for local Boy Scouts to attend this camp. Through the sales, some scouts can earn their way to camp plus raise money to support other activities without fundraising. Popcorn sales will be in October; please support these fine Boy Scouts to continue on their journey to Eagle Scout.
