Two heavy snowfalls, the second falling in the heels of the first, dumped 16
inches on the area within five days.
City, town and county snow removal crews worked around the clock in an attempt
to keep rods open for holiday shoppers, however the storms cut sharply into the
shopping volume during the past week.
Whipped by gusty winds, the first storm began late Wednesday, Dec. 18, and
continued through Thursday, leaving an 8-inch cover which was whipped into
drifts.
Cleanup operations not quite completed, the second storm hit Sunday at 3 a.m.,
adding another 8 inches. An east-northeaster, the snowfall was agitated by
blustery winds up to 30 mph.
