Some 2,600 customers, including 360 in Taylor County, are still without heat
after a 10-inch natural gas pipeline in Ashland County ruptured Monday morning.
The pipeline ruptured about five a.m. near Highway 13 south of Mellen, resulting
in a fire that burned itself out after the pipeline’s valves were closed to shut
of the flow of gas. Officials were alerted to the break after a resident
reported seeing 100-foot flames east of Highway 13. No injuries were reported.
Officials said the rupture of the underground pipeline shut of natural gas to
Rib Lake, Westboro, Ogema, Prentice, Phillips, Fifield, Butternut, Glidden and
Park Falls.
