Black, Doris Margaret (Kron) Sillman (4 APR 1918 - 11 JAN 2019)
Doris Black, 100, Holcombe, passed away peacefully Jan. 11, 2019, at Cornell
Health Services.
Doris Margaret Black was born April 4, 1918, in Conrath, at the home farm of her
parents, Peter and Elise (Carlson) Kron. She attended Oakview Elementary School,
a one-room school in the Town of Marshall in Rusk County. Upon completion of
eighth grade, she attended high school in Holcombe, for two years.
Doris married Albert Sillman June 15, 1940, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Ladysmith. They lived in Ladysmith, until the time of his death, March
16, 1945. Doris then moved to Holcombe, with their three young children.
She then married Lawrence Black Sept. 4, 1959. He passed away Dec. 21, 1982.
Doris worked in the Lake Holcombe School District as a cook for many years. Then
they moved to Burlington, where she worked in a bakery. Upon returning to
Holcombe, after marrying Lawrence, she worked at, and later rented, Trivoli,
which is now known as the Big Minnow. While there, she made and sold pizzas –
lots of pizzas. She cooked at area restaurants for more than 25 years. Needless
to say, she was an outstanding cook and baker.
Doris loved spending time with her family and friends. They helped her celebrate
her 100th birthday in April 2018. She also enjoyed crocheting, sewing,
gardening, crafting, playing Scrabble and visiting. She always had the coffee
pot on and a treat to share. She often said her coffee always tasted better
outside by the lake. Doris always took everything in stride and made the most of
whatever life offered her. She’s left a lasting impression upon everyone who has
known her.
She is survived by three children – Kenneth (Alice) Sillman, Alma, Lois (Eugene)
Himes, Owen, and Delores (Kenneth) Schulze, Milwaukee; nine grandchildren; 23
great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; three step-children –
Bonnie DeLaney, Grantsburg, Sharon (Harry) Miller, Holcombe, and Betty Helland,
Burlington; 47 step-grandchildren; 111 step-great-grandchildren, 158
step-great-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents – Peter and Elise Kron; husband –
Albert Sillman; husband – Lawrence Black; three sisters – Beatrice, Esther and
Alice; five brothers – Norman, Paul, Kenneth, Raymond and Leonard; three
step-sons – Don, Lloyd and Billy; one step-daughter – Margie; and one grandson –
Jim Schulze.
A memorial service and interment at the Holcombe Cemetery will be held at a
later date.
The family wishes to express a thank you to Cornell Health Services for the care
Doris received while she was a resident there.
