William L. Melvin (13 Oct 1919 - 3 Jun 2003)
William L. Melvin, 83, Lenexa, Kan., died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Lakeview
Village Nursing Home.
He was born on Oct. 13, 1919, in Irving, the son of James and Lydia (Whitney)
Melvin. His marriage to Margaret Clark took place on Dec. 29, 1945, at St.
Anthony’s Catholic Church, Kansas City, Kan. She survives.
Mr. Melvin served in the U.S. Army for 24 years, serving in World War II, Korea,
Germany and Oklahoma. He retired with rank of captain. For 20 years after his
retirement, he managed a grocery store in Kansas City, Kan.
Survivors besides his wife, include four sons, William Melvin, Winchester, Va.,
James Melvin, Kansas City, Kan., Patrick Melvin, Colorado Springs, Colo., and
John Melvin, Gardner, Kan.; one daughter, Margaret Long, Blue Springs, Mo.; 10
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth Melvin and
Elaine Melvin, both of Abbotsford.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Richard Melvin; four
sisters, Loretta German, Margaret Weideman, Genevieve Gasch and Elizabeth
Hempfner; and two brothers, Francis Melvin and Archie Melvin.
The funeral Mass was held June 7 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Lenexa, Kan.
Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, Kan.
