Agnes M. Bartnik (16 Apr 1909 - 25 Jan 2001)
Agnes M. Bartnik, 91, Colby, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001 at the Colonial
Center, Colby, where she had resided since April of 1992.
Funeral services were held Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Colby. The Rev.
Father John Malik presided. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were her grandsons Scott, Dan, Paul, Chris, Ken and
Robert Bartnik, Mark Ludwig, and Nathan Luepke.
Visitation was at Maurina Funeral Home, Abbotsford, on Sunday. There was a
Christian Mother’s rosary on Sunday, and also a combined parish and Knight’s of
Columbus rosary.
Mrs. Bartnik was born April 16, 1909, in the town of Holton, rural Dorchester,
the daughter of the late Anton and Pauline (Gass) Helfert. She attended school
at the former Bruckerville School and St. Louis Catholic School in Dorchester.
She later was employed as a care-giver and housekeeper in Chicago.
She and Frank Bartnik were married June 6, 1934, at St. Louis Catholic Church,
Dorchester. They farmed in the town of Holton until 1971, and retired to Colby.
He preceded her in death in July 1973. Mrs. Bartnik was a homemaker and enjoyed
baking, sewing, gardening and playing her accordion. She was a former member of
St. Thomas Church and the Altar Society in Milan, and then became a member of
St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Christian Mothers Parish Council of Catholic
Women, Colby.
She is survived by six sons: Lawrence (Joanne) Bartnik, Colby; Frederick (Lauranne)
Barnik, Mosinee; Arthur (Judy) Bartnik, Mosinee; Roger (Irene) Bartnik, Athens;
Eugene (Kristel) Bartnik, Dorchester; and Richard (Teri) Bartnik, Abbotsford;
one daughter, Marilyn (Neil) Luepke, Marshfield; 31 grandchildren; 25
great-grandchildren; two sisters: Marie Kugel, Medford, and Cecilia (Ted)
Schmidt, Abbotsford; and daughter-in-law, Betty Bartnik, Oshkosh; a son-in-law,
Ronald Ludwig, Merrill; and a sister-in-law, Beatrice Helfert, Colby.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by son Charles
Bartnik; daughter Kathleen Ludwig; one granddaughter; five brothers: Anthony,
Nicholas, Paul, Joseph and TSgt. Carl Helfert.
