Verna W. Schmidt (25 Apr 1920 - 22 Nov 2002)
Verna W. Schmidt, 83, of Dorchester, died Friday Nov. 22, 2002, under Hospice
Care at Wausau Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in
Dorchester.
Burial will be in Dorchester Memorial Cemetery. Rev. Jerome Freimuth will
officiate.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren: Todd and Nicole Schmidt, Jayne and Tony
Kromanacker, Jon and Peggy Empey, and Cindy and Mark Crimmons. Honorary
pallbearers will be Terralyn Schmidt and Adam Schmidt.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in
Dorchester and from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church.
Verna was born April 25, 1920, in Mt. Prospect, Ill., to the late Herman and
Elsie (Frishmann) Kloth. She attended schools in Marathon County. On May 25,
1939, Verna was united in marriage to Richard E. Schmidt at St. Peter Lutheran
Parsonage in Dorchester. They lived in Spencer for a short time after their
marriage and in 1940 they moved to Red Wing, Minnesota, and later to
Minneapolis. In April 1946 they moved back to the Dorchester area. She worked at
Danielsen’s Cleaners and was a cook at Dorchester Memorial Hall. She was a
member of St. Peter Lutheran Church.
Verna was an accomplished seamstress and had many customers whom she enjoyed
knowing and sewing for. She could fix almost anything and make it fit right. She
enjoyed playing pool, being up north at the cabin, dancing and polka music, and
traveling and her many relatives and friends. She will be missed a lot by her
family.
Verna is survived by her husband of 63 years Richard Schmidt of Dorchester, her
daughter Donna (Allen) Empey of Marshfield, her son Terry (Kathy) Schmidt of
Santa Cruz, Calif., her six grandchildren Terralyn Schmidt, Adam Schmidt, Jon
(Peggy) Empey, Cindy (Mark) Crimmons, Todd (Nicole) Schmidt, and Jayne (Tony)
Kromanacker, seven great-grandchildren, three sisters Jean (Ray) Steen of
Medford, Esther (Frank) Umlauft of Dorchester and Blondina (Walter) Bucki of
Medford.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son Verlyn Schmidt in 1986, a
brother Eugene Kloth, a sister Viola and a great-grandson Nathaniel Empey.
