Herbert Nicholas Sauer (14 Jan 1922 - 25 Dec 2003)

Herbert Nicholas Sauer, 81, Colby, died Thursday, Dec. 25 at his home under hospice care. Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 30 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colby, with Rev. John Malik officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Town of Colby, Clark County. Pallbearers were Joshua, Daniel, Charles and Scott Sauer; Michael Kleparski, and Daniel McGhee.

Herbert Sauer was born Jan. 14, 1922 at Medford to the late Michael and Catherine (Henrichs) Sauer. He attended schools in Medford.

His marriage to Marcella Loos, who preceded him in death November 15, 1987, took place October 20, 1945, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. His marriage to Donna Budimlija, who survives, took place August 28, 1992 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

He farmed in the Medford area and then moved to Woodstock, Ill., and was the head herdsman for Hughes Farms. He moved back to the Colby area and worked for Abby Auto, Zuthers, and Harmony Co-op. He was the co-founder of S&K Dairy Equipment in Colby. He was named the Citizen of the Year by the Colby Chamber of Commerce in 1985. He received the Catholic Family Life Insurance Service Award and Colonial Center Service Award.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He served as a communion minister at church and for the homebound. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Colby Chamber of Commerce and area senior bowling leagues. He enjoyed fishing, dancing, bowling, traveling, and card playing.

In addition to his wife, Donna, survivors include a daughter, Eunice (Nick) Kleparski of Colby; two sons, Clifford (Jenny) of Wausau, and Roger (Carmen) of Marshfield; three step-sons, Richard (Kim) Budimlija of Rockford, Ill., Ronald (Barb) Budimlija of Schofield and Randall (Wendy) Budimlija of Rib Lake; a step-daughter, Sandra (Tony) Simek of Cody, Wyo.; a brother, Joseph of Medford; two sisters, Frances (Alvin) Guth of Rice Lake, and Jeanette (Richard) Miller of Medford; eight grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Marcella, and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Walter; a great-granddaughter, Nicolette Kleparski; three sisters, Margaret Pernsteiner, Dolores Zicco-Dzik, Regina Werner; and three brothers, Leo, Felix, and Alvin.
