Lowell Maxam (18 Jun 1917 - 26 Jun 1998)
Lowell H. Maxam, 81, Unity, died Friday, June 26, at the House of the Dove in
Marshfield where he had resided for five weeks. Funeral services were held
Monday, June 29, at Peace United Church of Christ in Dorchester with Rev. Robert
Everhard officiating.
Burial took place in Dorchester Memorial Cemetery. Military graveside rites were
conducted by the Colby Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2227 of Colby. Pallbearers
were Scott and Marlin Maguire, Glen Strasser, Trevor Bechel, and Nathan and Cory
Heeg. Michael Bechel was an honorary pallbearer.
Lowell H. Maxam was born June 18, 1917, in Stetsonville to Harvey and Minnie (Kuzenski)
Maxam. He attended Frey School in the Town of Deer Creek and graduated from
Dorchester High School and Stout State College - Menomonie with a degree in
agriculture. A US Army Infantry veteran, he entered the service in early 1941,
was discharged and called back in 1942, and was then discharged on December 24,
1945. He served in both the European and Pacific Theatres. His marriage to
Hildegarde R. Beisner took place on January 6, 1942, in Dorchester.
He farmed in Stetsonville for 21 years. In 1969, he moved to Dorchester and was
employed with Colby Packaging in Colby. He later worked as the custodian at the
Dorchester Elementary School. He retired in 1979 and moved to Unity. He enjoyed
gardening and fishing.
He was a member of Peace United Church of Christ and of the Colby VFW Post 2227.
Survivors include his wife, Hildegarde of Unity; seven daughters, Monica (Dan)
Maguire of Wisconsin Rapids, Marlene (Kenneth) Strasser and Tina (Gary) Heeg,
both of Unity, Sandi (Tony) Bechel of Perkin, Ill., Dawn (Jeff) Colvin of
Wausau, Faith (Mark) Heeg of Colby, and Lori (Bill) Heindl of Edgar; two sons,
Harvey (Judy) of Wisconsin Rapids and Mark (Barb) Maxam of Unity; one sister,
Lillian (Charles) Smead of Milwaukee; 26 grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and four sisters.
