VanDerLoop, Paul (20 AUG 1922 - 28 JAN 2019)

Paul VanDerLoop, 96 of Bruce, and formerly of Tony, passed away on Monday, Jan. 28, 2019, at Marshfield Medical Center - Ladysmith.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31, at Nash-Jackan Funeral Home in Bruce. A Celebration of Life will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 2, in the Ladysmith Care Community chapel. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Habitat for Humanity are preferred.

Paul VanDerLoop of Bruce and formerly of Tony, WI passed away on January 28, 2019 at Rusk County Memorial Hospital.

He was born on August 20, 1922, in Tony, to George VanDerLoop and Alice (Reynders) VanDerLoop. Paul was the 5th of 13 children. He grew up on the farm in Tony and loved working with draft horses; he maintained this love of horses for the rest of his life. He went to high school for one year and worked on his father's farm, and started learning the auctioneer business.

In 1942 he joined the army and was sent to North Africa and Italy. He was in anti-aircraft in Africa, was in the infantry in the Italian Campaign, and was a radio man at the battle of Monte Cassino. Part of his duties toward the end of the war was to escort prisoners of war home to Germany. Looking from the train windows, he saw some remarkable cows which he later learned were the Simmental breed.

After the war he returned to Tony, met and married Mildred Mae Charais in 1948. They were married for 63 years.

He farmed dairy cattle, trucked baby pigs, and worked a variety of other jobs to keep the family and farm going. Later he decided to raise beef cattle and went for the Simmental cattle that he had never forgotten. He was a founding member of the Simmental Association of America, winning many awards for his cattle. He enjoyed selling calves for 4-H shows and also was an active participant in 4H for many years.

He sold his cattle and went to Texas in 1977 during an oil boom where he worked as a roustabout and a mud logger. He enjoyed learning new things but missed his cows and horses. Returning in 1982, he went back to raising beef cattle and Appaloosa horses. He finally achieved his dream of a mule with Appaloosa markings.

Paul was great at producing something from nothing. He believed in small sustainable farming and helped many farmers start their herds. Because of his early auctioneer training he loved auctions and beef and horse sales. He was a participant in community events, volunteered at the Rusk County Historical Society and with Habitat for Humanity. He was a lover of history, collected old books, was an avid reader, and at the age of 78, he wrote a book about his life called I Am Paul.

Paul VanDerLoop is survived by his daughters, Rose Smith, Suzanne Dougherty, Mary Lou VanDerLoop (Bill Bresett), Beth VanDerLoop, Margaret (Ed) Thompson, Catherine VanDerLoop, Barbara (Len) Asbury, Celia VanDerLoop and Becky VanDerLoop (Scott Goren); his son, Steven (Caroline) VanDerLoop; grandchildren, Mike, David and Doug Dougherty; Ian Guy; David, Steven and Rosellen Avary; Cinci, Zack and Jesse VanderBales; Eva and Van Thompson; Boden VanDerLoop; Josh and Sam Alexander; Nick and Ryan Thomas; great-grandchildren, Celina and Nicalai Guy; Jack and Violet Guy, Trent and Jacob Avary; Jackson Avary; and Elowen VanderBales. He is also survived by his sisters, Martina Doell, Loretta VanDerLoop (Sr. Mary John), Dorothy Krajewski, Gertude O'Brien, Audrey Kvist, Anne Hauber; brothers, Ted and George VanDerLoop; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, neighbors and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Charais VanDerLoop; an infant son, John; an infant daughter, Theresa; a grandson, Sean Guy; sons-in-law, Jerry Bales, Wally Dougherty and Bob Avary; and sisters, Marie Haasl, Sr. Mary Bernice VanDerLoop, Eunice Rybicki, and Eileen Rotta.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2019 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Nash-Jackan Funeral Home in Bruce. A Celebration of Life will be held at Ladysmith Care Community in the Cameo Room on Saturday February 2, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Habitat for Humanity are preferred.
