In the world of agriculture, the family farm has been the traditional unit of
measurement and the catch-phrase in every rural politician’s stump speech as
sure as motherhood and apple pie.
However, a sweeping change in farming has moved agriculture away from the ideal
of self-sufficient family farmstead to a complex industrial center where raw
materials are trucked in from specialty producers and finished product is
trucked out.
Some call these factory of feedlot farms - terms heavy with negative
connotations. Those who study these things call them concentrated animal feeding
operations (CAFO’s) and say they are the face of the future in agriculture as
margins continue to narrow and costs continue to climb.
There is nothing new about CAFO’s, they have been around for decades, what is
new is that a group of investors has announce plans to build “North Breeze
Dairy, LLC” a 4,000 cow dairy operation on 133 acres on Section 26 in the Town
of Little black, not too far from the intersection of Elm Avenue and Gibson
Drive.
Last week, two busloads of area residents, about 90 altogether, traveled to Lake
Breese dairy in Malone, not far from the eastern shores of Lake Winnebago.
