Duane Jarocki, a 14-year-old from Owen (Clark Co.), Wisconsin, has won first
prize in a national dairy cattle judging contest sponsored by Hoard's Dairyman,
a national dairy farm magazine published at Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin.
He complied a score of 488 out of a possible 500 to place first among the
105,291 entries in the Junior Division from all 50 states, Canada and Puerto
Rico. Jarocki lives on a 300-acre dairy farm, where they milk 40 Holsteins. This
year, he was selected to receive Star Greenhand given by the Owen-Withee FFA
chapter.
Now in its 44th consecutive year, the contest involves judging five classes of
dairy cattle that any picture in Hoard's Dairyman magazine. Nationally known
dairy cattle judges make the official placing, and the contestants are graded
accordingly. This year an all-time record of 121, 317 entries were received from
all 50 states, as well as Canada, Germany, Honduras, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon,
New Zealand, Puerto Rico and South Africa.
In addition to Wisconsin, other Junior Division winners came from Virginia, New
York, Kentucky, Iowa, Utah and Illinois.
