Chandler, Caleb Woodworth "Woody" (13 November 1846-3 December 1925)

Caleb Woodworth Chandler, Civil War veteran and resident of Windsor
for the past 25 years, died early this morning at the residence of his
son, Ira, 469 Wellington Avenue. He was 78 years old and had been ill
for more than a year.

While serving with the forces of the Northern States in the Civil
War, he was badly wounded and crippled for life, in the assault on
Gettysburg.

Mr. Chandler took part in several of the engagements fought during
the Civil War. Joining the 5th Regiment of Wisconsin Infantry, at
Albion, Wisconsin, he was assigned to the third brigade, first division,
sixth corps of the Army of the Potomac. He fought in this corps until
honorably discharged as medically unfit. In fraternal circles, he was a
member of the Odd Fellows, having joined Bay of Quinte Lodge 60 years
ago.

Surviving are two sons, Ira, of Windsor: John A., of Toronto, and two
daughters, Mrs. H. N. (Hazel) Werden of Windsor, and Mrs. Nettie Cox of
Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Funeral services will be held under the auspices of the Odd Fellows,
Friday from George Chubb's funeral parlors. The body will be shipped to
Picton, Ontario for burial on Monday.

Added note: Caleb was the husband of Sarah Bowerman and the son of James
Chandler. He was preceded in death by his wife, one sons, Irwin "Chubb"
Candler and one daughter Harriett "Eva" Milligan. Caleb and Sarah are
buried in Cherry Valley, Ontario, Canada

(Additional note from Kathleen Englebretson)
It is doubtful that Caleb was at Gettysburg as he did dot enlist until
September of 1864. According to his pension application, he contracted
dysentery within weeks and spent the rest of the war in the camp
hospital.
