Clarence Mertens returned home from Victory Memorial Hospital at Stanley last
Wednesday after having been confined since the previous Saturday, due to an
accident in his barn, at about 6 a.m., when a bull attacked him.
Injuries to his chest were extensive, and he had some broken bones in the upper
arm and shoulder. What really saved him was his quick thinking to grab a ring in
the bull's nose after it had gouged him in the chest a number of time, and the
help of his son-in-law, Jerry Tomaschack, who came to his rescue after hearing
the commotion. The bull was a 1 1/2 year old weight about 1,200 pounds and had
been kind of ugly.
The bull was sent to market on Monday.
