Grewe, Larry A. (1942? - 24 FEB 2019)
Larry A. Grewe, age 77, of Troy, Mich., passed away Feb. 24, 2019.
He was the son of Melvin and Theresa Grewe, Dorchester. Larry is survived by his
wife of 57 years, Ruth (Bockin); daughter, Cheryl (John) Fatcheric; son, Tim
(Annie) Grewe; and grandchildren, Brian, Jason and Jordan Grewe. His daughter,
Sandra, preceded him in death in 2001.
A professional engineer, Larry earned a BSEE degree at UW-Madison by attending
night school while working full time as a hybrid computer tech at the
university. After graduating, he worked for General Electric in Schenectady,
N.Y. Larry was a Boy Scout leader for Troop 59 in Scotia, N.Y. Canoeing in the
Adirondacks was a favorite hobby, and great fun for the scouts. He moved to
Michigan to work for General Dynamics Land Systems in 1986. He had a heart
transplant in 2003 and retired.
Larry then collaborated with Joan Kempf to write, “The Lone Pine Remembers,” an
oral history of his family farm in Dorchester and the Bruckerville and Barry
Schools. He had a very successful book signing at the Holton Town Hall.
Larry enjoyed gardening and shared many tomatoes with his doctors at the
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He enjoyed discussing politics and solving
the world’s problems. One of his favorite sayings was, “When your life flashes
before your eyes, make sure you enjoy the show.” Larry’s was a life well lived.
A prayer service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 1, 2019, at the
Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford. Interment is to follow at the
Dorchester Memorial Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome from 5-7 p.m. on
Thursday, Feb. 28 and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Friday at the
funeral home.
