Werdin to be Honored By Neillsville Legion (Werdin - 2019)

Chris Werdin will be one of two area veterans to be honored by the Neillsville
Legion in March.
Born in Stanley, Werdin went to grade school in Thorp until his family moved to
Whitewater. Werdin graduated from Whitewater High School in 1975. Prior to
graduation, Werdin joined the National Guard in Whitewater in 1974.
Werdin’s basic training was at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. His advanced
individual training was a at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.
Werdin worked as a heavy truck mechanic at first, but later was an auto body
repairman.
In 1979, Werdin was with the engineers at the Abbotsford National Guard
location. In 1985, he attended the basic non-commissioned officers course at the
Wisconsin Military Academy and the advanced course at Camp Beauregard in
Pineville, Louisiana. He was the first sergeant at the Wisconsin Military
School.
Werdin attended air assault school at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii on the island
of Oahu. In 1988, he took an instructor course and taught leadership for three
years at the Wisconsin Military Academy. He served with the 2nd/128th infantry.
He was a part of the Reforger exercise in Germany in 1986 and 1988. He also
served at Fort Riley, Kansas; Fort Campbell, Kentucky and Redstone Arsenal near
Huntsville, Alabama, where he worked on many additional duties.
Werdin has worked for more than 35 years as an auto body repairman. He had 21
years of active duty. He retired in 1996 as an E-8.
He has two children, Brent and Kristina, and five grandchildren. He is a
volunteer at the Legion Steak Feed. He enjoys traveling, fishing and hunting.
Werdin will be honored along with Terry Wulff at the American Legion Post 73, 6
Boon Boulevard, Neillsville, during a potluck this Monday, March 4, at 5:30 p.m.
There will be a social hour immediately prior starting at 4:30 p.m.
