Wisconsin dominated the 2019 U.S. Championship Cheese Contest in Green Bay this
week, sweeping more than half of the categories judged. ,
Marieke Gouda of Thorp claimed both the first and second runner-up positions
with their Marieke Gouda Premium aged cheese and Marieke Gouda Overjarige
specialty entry. Marieke Gouda came in just one-tenth of a point behind the
grand champion cheese, which was a Baby Swiss Wheel made in Millersburg, Ohio.
This year's contest drew a record-breaking 2,555 entries from 35 states.
Wisconsin captured 52 percent
of the gold awards, including 60 of the total 116 given Companies from
American's Dairyland also swept the gold, silver and bronze medals in 25
individual classes.
New York ranked second in total awards with nine golds, followed by California
and Idaho, which each had six.
The U.S. Championship Cheese Contest is the nation's premier technical cheese,
butter and yogurt competition. It has been held biennially in Wisconsin since
1981.
