Helgerson, Robert “Bob” Edward (8 APR 1927 - 24 FEB 2019)
Robert “Bob” Edward Helgerson passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019.
Bob was born April 8, 1927, the son of Otto and Violet Helgerson. He graduated
from Cornell High School, then proudly served his country, enlisting in the
United States Navy and was honorably discharged.
Carol and Bob were united in marriage Nov. 6, 1948, at Our Savior’s Lutheran
Church in Cornell. They lived their entire married life in Cornell, celebrating
70 years of marriage in 2018.
They made their home on Eighth Street, until November of 2018, when they moved
to Cornell Health Services.
To this marriage, four children were welcomed into their lives – Robert “Mike”
(Nancy), Kathleen (Jim) Zuehl, Marilyn and Barbara Ewings.
He was employed at the Cornell paper mill his entire working career. At his
retirement, he held the position of production supervisor. Bob was a member of
Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his brother – Harold (Marge); three children; seven
grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife – Carol; and daughter – Marilyn.
As their children grew, they enjoyed many activities as a family – camping,
hunting, fishing, traveling and attending school activities. Later, celebrations
of graduations, weddings, baptisms and the births of their grandchildren, they
happily embraced.
After Bob’s retirement, they traveled extensively in the United States, and to
Sweden, Germany, and Carol’s mother’s birth place, Norway. Many good friends
were made in these travels. Bob enjoyed hunting with his son and grandchildren.
His favorite activity, was keeping the large lawn mowed with his tractor. He
enjoyed sitting outside in the summer, visiting with his brother, Harold.
Among their greatest blessings, are their beloved grandchildren, who lovingly
call them Grandpa and Grandma – Matthew (Tracy), Andrew (Stephanie), Michael,
Rachel (Marshall), Nathan (Roberta), Stephanie (David) and Jason (Erin); and
great-grandchildren – Marit, Merrick, Björn, Graham, Ellie, Claire, Evan,
Cadence Marilyn Kay, Maddie, Parker, Bryanna, Bryan, Makenzie and Morgan.
We are grateful for all the love and guidance they gave us, and values they
instilled in all of us. We will dearly miss them but they are forever in our
hearts – two beautiful souls called home.
“Memories keep a song in your heart,” so many memories and so many songs.
Their funeral services were held together at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 2, at Our
Savior’s Lutheran Church in Cornell, with Pastor Andy Schottelkorb officiating.
Interment was at the Cornell Cemetery. Visitation was from 9:30 a.m., until the
time of service, Saturday, at the church.
