Salzman, Lawrence R. “Larry” (25 APR 1928 - 4 APR 2019)
Lawrence R. “Larry” Salzman, 90, of Medford, passed away April 4, 2019
surrounded by his family at Marshfield Medical Center, under the care of
Marshfield Palliative Care.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday April 9, 2019 at Holy
Rosary Catholic Church. Father Phil Juza officiated the mass. Burial was held at
Mt. Olive Cemetery, Westboro, WI.
Larry was born April 25, 1928 to Joseph and Mary (Niziolek) Salzman at Cassel,
WI. He was the oldest of 12 siblings. He received his education at St. Mary’s
Catholic School and the Technical School in Wausau. At the age of 16 he drove a
milk route for his father. In 1948 he moved to Westboro and bought the Shell Gas
Station, at the same time he also owned a pulp truck hauling logs to Tomahawk
for loggers in the area.
His marriage to Mary Jean Bundick took place December 10, 1951 at St. John the
Baptist Catholic Church in Rib Lake, WI. After their marriage Larry sold the
business in Westboro and bought some gravel trucks. He worked for various
contractors in road construction. They also owned a farm West of Medford where
they raised their family. In 1974 they sold the farm. Larry continued to work
road construction in Illinois and the family settled in Freeport, IL. Larry
retired from RS&D of Illinois in 1986. They traveled for 10 years spending the
winters in South Texas. In 1996 they moved back to Medford and bought the
Lickity Split drive in. They sold it when Larry’s health worsened. He loved
working with his high school crew at Lickity Split.
Larry loved to complete wood crafts for the family until he lost his eye sight.
He still loved to stay busy by cooking, and he worked “The Table” with Deacon
Joe and the rest of the crew for 9 years at Holy Rosary Social Center.
Larry is survived by his wife Mary of 67 years, and 6 children: Jean Ann
(Bradley) Williams of Argyle, TX, Larry (Ester) Salzman of Medford, David (Rita)
Salzman of Medford, Michael (Rosa) Salzman of Janesville, WI, Peter (Susie)
Salzman of Knoxville, TN, Paul (Janice) Salzman of Beloit, WI, 19 Grandchildren,
27 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great Great Grandchild, 1 Brother James (Sandy)
Salzman of Ringle, WI, Rose (Norbert) Henrichs of Minocqua, Lucille (Richard)
Bousley of Townsend, Pearl (Jim) Wallner, Louise Williams, Mary K. (Jim) Smith
and Esther Salzman all of Wausau, WI and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He is preceded in death by his Parents, Siblings Josephine Breit, Arnold,
Marvin, Leonard and Baby Sister Delores Salzman, Father and Mother in Law
Raymond and Aprillia Bundick.
Larry was of the Catholic Faith where he had a passion for serving, he worked
many funerals with Father Gerard at Holy Rosary and was also a Eucharistic
Minister. He was a proud 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of
the Retired Teamster Club Local 325, and was a volunteer Officer for the
Freeport Auxiliary Police.
Larry was a loving husband, father and grandfather and friend. He was always
ready to help family, friends, neighbors and strangers. He fought a long battle
with cancer and will be missed by many.
Memorial donations in honor of Larry can be given to the family for designation
at a later date or a charity of the donor’s choice in Larry’s name.
