The Gilman School Board voted 6-1 Monday night at its regular meeting to end
consolidation talks with the Cornell School District. The move ends eight months
discussions by the two school boards. Gilman School Board President Jerry Sromek
was the only no vote.
“What we have to get past is they do not want to close a building in the first
five years and we (Gilman) would have to go to block scheduling to accommodate
sharing some staff,” Sromek said of the issues holding up the talks.
Using an analogy cited often in the consolidation process, Sromek said small
schools might be stuck later with a consolidation option they don’t like if they
do not look into it now. “It’s like a high school dance. Do we want to wait
until all the partners are gone?” Srmoek said.
