Gilles, Mary (Grohn) (29 OCT 1935 - 16 APR 2019)
Mary (Grohn) Gilles, 83, the Town of Edson, went to join her Joe in their
heavenly home April 16, 2019.
Mary Margaret Grohn was born Oct. 29, 1935, to Walter W. and Christine (Zempel)
Grohn.
She was baptized into the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Chippewa
Falls. Mary was raised on a farm in the Town of Edson. She went to the McKinley
School and graduated from Cadott High School. She was confirmed at St. Peter’s
Lutheran Church in Boyd, April 10, 1949.
She married Joseph “Joe” A. Gilles Nov. 14, 1953. They became life-long members
of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Mary and Joe raised their children on the family
farm in rural Cadott. They worked the 100-year farm from 1959-90.
She is survived by her three children – Debra L. (Peter) Nordgren, Cornucopia,
Kathy L. (Ken) Nuenke, Eau Claire, and Joe D. (Jane) Gilles, Cadott; her
grandchildren – Eric (Kendra) Nordgren, Duluth, Minn., Todd (Elliott Post)
Nordgren, Chicago, Ill., Jenna Gilles-Turner, Eau Claire, Michelle (Joe) Murray,
Stoughton, and Joseph B. Gilles, Cadott; her great-grandchildren – Magnolia
Gilles, Sadie, Jasper, William Murray and Ida Nordgren; her sister – Sharon
Doers, Chippewa Falls; sister-in-law – Phyllis Grohn, Eau Claire; and
sisters-in-law – Cecilia Wahl, Marge Seffernick, Seattle, Bernadine and George
Jackson, Cadott, and Nila McQuary, Commerce, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her spouse – Joseph “Joe” A. Gilles; her parents –
Walter and Christine Grohn; in-laws – Joseph and Bernice Gilles; brother –
Clifford Grohn; sister-in-law – Betty Grohn; brother in-law – Darrell Doers;
in-laws – Ray and Arlene Nelson, Howard and Olga Gilles, Jentof Wahl, William
Seffernick, Bernard and Bernadine Gilles, and John McQuary.
Mary wanted to thank Lisa and JuliAnne, RNs from Heartland Hospice and all the
nurses who kept her comfortable for the last few months.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 23, at St. Peter’s Lutheran
Church in Boyd, with the Rev. Raymond Bell officiating. Interment was in St.
Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in the Town of Edson, following the service.
Visitations were held from 5-7 p.m., Monday, April 22, at St. Peter’s Lutheran
Church in Boyd, and one hour before funeral services, Tuesday, at the church.
Leiser Funeral Home in Cadott, is handling arrangements.
