Lawrence Decker, AMS-3, serving with the U.S. Navy in the Vietnam and Philippine
area, had the opportunity to see Pope Paul VI on his recent tour of the
Philippines.
Decker was with his patrol squadron on a check of the damage done by the typhoon
in the Islands, and came within a few feet of the Pope as he was riding in a
motorcade through the streets.
In a letter to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Decker of Colby (Clark Co.,
Wis.), he described the experience as a "thrill of a lifetime!" He also saw the
president and first lady of the Philippines at the time.
