Mrs. George Wicker, Colby (Clark Co., Wis.), celebrated her 94th birthday on New
Year's Day with an open house held that afternoon at her home.
The event was planned and conducted by the ladies of the Methodist Church.
Friends and relatives were invited to come for coffee between 2 and 5 p.m.
Mrs. (Fannie) Wicker was the first telephone operator in Colby, prior to her
marriage. After she was married, she, her husband and son lived on a farm near
Colby for many years. Since leaving farming, she has lived in her present house
in Colby. Mr. Wicker has been deceased since 1959, but the couple celebrated
their golden anniversary in 1955.
Mrs. Wicker can tell many tales about living in Wisconsin prior to the
automobile and electric appliances. Many times she drove a horse and buggy, and
tells about the time she had to drive a "runaway" team.
She recalls carrying water to do the family wash in the old wooden tubs, baking
n an old wood range, and cooking for crews of threshers, lumberjacks and silo
fillers..
Mrs. Wicker has been active in church affairs and was treasurer for many years.
She has held offices in the Ladies' Aid and still attends WSCS meetings and
church regularly.
Her only son, Gilbert, is now in a convalescent home in Marshfield.
Mrs. Wicker was honored at an earlier birthday party in the home of her niece,
Evelyn Wicker, Sunday, December 27.
