Hoffman, Walter H. (24 JUN 1925 – 19 DEC 2019)
Walter H. Hoffman, 94, Weston, formerly of Loyal, passed away on Thursday, Dec.
19, 2019, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. A memorial service will be held at a later
date in the spring of 2020.
Walter Harry Hoffman was born in Tomahawk on June 24, 1925, to Frank and Helen
(nee Haug) Hoffman. He was raised and received his education in the Tomahawk
area, where he attended Mitchell School. His family moved to a farm in Loyal in
1944. Walt worked on the farm until being inducted into the U.S. Army on April
9, 1953. After his discharge from the service on March 25, 1955, he returned to
Loyal and worked on the family farm until taking it over in 1955. He and his
brother, Art, owned and operated the farm until 1989, at which time they sold
the farm and moved into Loyal. Walt worked with Paul Gloudeman doing painting in
the Loyal area. He resided in Loyal until moving to Stoney River Assisted Living
in Weston in 2014. He was a very active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where
he served on the church council; a member of the Loyal American Legion Post
#175, where he was a past post commander; was a past commander for the Clark
County American Legion; and was a member of the Neillsville V.F.W. Post #2441,
and the 40 & 8 Group 821 Wisconsin. Walt had many interests, but especially
enjoyed fishing and bowling. In appreciation for the many hours of volunteer
work for the American Legion and the community, Walter and his brother, Arthur,
were honored by the city of Loyal as Citizens of the Year in 2013.
He is survived by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Edward and Arthur
Hoffman; four sisters: Myrtle Ehlke, Elsie Fyke, Gladys Town and Blanche
Scharnick; and one nephew: Richard Ehlke.
