Burhop, Louis W. (29 APR 1911 – 21 AUG 1975)
Louis W. Burhop, 64, an area businessman and civic leader the past 31 years,
passed away at 6:30 Thursday morning, August 21, 1975 at St. Joseph's Hospital,
Marshfield. He had been admitted to the hospital for treatment of an acute
illness on the 7th of August.
At 7:30 Saturday evening Masonic and Easter Star services were conducted at the
Kraut-Maurina Funeral Home, with funeral services being conducted from St.
Katherine's Episcopal Church, Owen, at 1:30 Sunday afternoon. Officiating at
this serves were Fr. James Kaestner, pastor of St. Alban's Episcopal Church,
Marshfield and Fr. Alexander Fraser, pastor of St. Katherine's parish, Owen.
Serving as pallbearers were Masonic Brothers, C.O. Albert, Bert Cattanach, S.E.
Grimes, Rol Haire, Frank Olszewski, , and Carl Vater. Interment was made at
Riverside Cemetery.
Louis W. Burhop was born April 29, 1911 at Colby (Clark Co., Wis.), where he
received his education, and on August 3rd, 1932 was united in marriage to the
former Alyce Roohr, who survives him. The couple made their home in Colby until
1944, when they moved to Owen (Clark Co.), where he had accepted a position with
Western Condensing Company (now Foremost Foods). In 1948 he purchased the Cities
Oil Service Station in Owen, which he operated until 1950, when he purchased the
Withee Garage at Withee and obtained the franchise to distribute Oldsmobile
automobiles in the area.
During this extended and successful business carer he also was actively engaged
in community and civic affairs, having been a charter member of the Withee Lions
Club and a Past President of the Club, a member of the Withee Businessmen's
Club, a member of the Owen Masonic Lodge, No. 117 F&AM, having served as Master
of the Lodge in 1962-63, and as its secretary since 1962. He was affiliated with
the Eau Claire Consistory, Zor Shrine in Madison, Order of Eastern Star, Grand
Chapter of Loyal, Arch Masons in Neillsville, and Grand Council of Royal and
Select Masters in Marshfield, and he was a devout member of St. Katherine's
Parish, Owen, and had served as its treasurer for a number of years.
Mourning his demise are his wife, Alyce, Owen; a son, Alan, Owen; two daughters,
Mrs. Joseph (Darlene) Switzky, Middleton and Mrs. Robert (Diane) Prock, Chippewa
Falls; three sisters, Mrs. Hattie Kraus, Wausau, Mrs. Gus (Alvina) Golhardt,
Thorp, and Mrs. Lydia Alexander, Shafter, California; a brother, Henry Sieber,
Hartford, and five grandchildren, in addition to a host of close friends he had
endeared himself to over the years through his mild manner, personality, and
business relations.
